Maintenance Tips from the Field

Over the years, I've picked up a few maintenance practices that make a real difference. Here are the ones that matter most:

Keep a maintenance log. Document every inspection, every part replacement, every repair. Include dates, measurements, and what was done. This log is invaluable for tracking wear patterns, planning future maintenance, and diagnosing problems. A $10 notebook and 5 minutes per day will save you thousands.

Stock critical spare parts. Don't wait for something to break before ordering parts. Use the manufacturer's recommended lubricants. I know it's tempting to use whatever grease is cheapest. But the mixer bearings and gearboxes are designed for specific lubricants. Plan your annual shutdown well in advance. Coordinate with your customers so they know you'll be offline for 3-5 days. Order all parts at least a month before the shutdown. Have the maintenance crew scheduled. A well-planned annual shutdown is smooth and efficient. A rushed one always misses something.
