Check the certificate number. Every legitimate certification has a unique number. Look up the certification body online and check their database. If the certificate number isn't in their system, it's fake.
Verify the scope of certification. Some manufacturers get ISO 9001 certification for their sales office but not for the factory. The certificate should clearly state the scope — "Design and manufacture of concrete batching equipment" or similar. If the scope is something vague like "Trading of machinery," that's a red flag.
Ask for the technical file. For CE marking, the manufacturer should have a full technical file documenting the compliance process. If they can't produce it within a reasonable time, the CE marking is probably fake.
Contact the certification body. Most certification bodies have a verification page on their website. Enter the certificate number and see if it comes back valid. If the certification body's name is unfamiliar, do some research — there are certification bodies that issue certificates without proper auditing, and those certificates are essentially worthless.
At the end of the day, certifications are tools — they help you assess quality, clear customs, and win projects. But they're not a substitute for doing your own due diligence. Inspect the plant, visit the factory if you can, talk to other customers, and use certifications as one data point among many in your decision-making process.
