Let me be straight with you — buying a used concrete batching plant can save you a lot of money, but it can also cost you a fortune if you do it wrong. I've seen too many buyers get excited about a low price tag and end up with a machine that spends more time in the repair shop than producing concrete. Over the years working with clients across Africa, Central Asia, and Southeast Asia, I've put together a pretty solid checklist for evaluating second-hand plants, and I'm going to share all of it with you here.
The global market for pre-owned batching plants is bigger than most people realize. When infrastructure projects wrap up in the Middle East or Europe, those plants don't just disappear — they get listed for sale. And a lot of them end up shipped to developing markets where the demand for concrete is climbing fast. The trick is knowing what to look for, what to walk away from, and how to get the machine from where it is to your job site without breaking the bank on shipping and customs.
Before we dive into the inspection checklist, let's talk about whether buying used even makes sense for your situation. Because honestly, it's not the right move for everybody.
The biggest advantage is obvious — price. A well-maintained used plant typically runs 40 to 60 percent less than the same model new. For an HZS90 plant that might cost $80,000 new, a five-year-old unit in good shape could go for $35,000 to $45,000. That's real money, especially if you're just starting a ready-mix operation or expanding capacity on a tight budget.
There's also the delivery time angle. New plants from Chinese manufacturers usually take 30 to 45 days from order to shipping. A used plant that's already in a dealer's yard? You could have it on a container ship within a week. When you've got a contract deadline breathing down your neck, that speed matters.
But here's the downside — and I'm not going to sugarcoat it. Used equipment comes with unknown history. You don't know how many cubic meters that mixer has churned through. You don't know if the previous operator ran it with the wrong aggregate moisture settings. You don't know if the load cells got slammed during a move. Every used plant is a gamble. The goal of this guide is to help you tilt the odds in your favor.
Finding listings isn't hard. The hard part is finding honest listings. Here's where I'd look first if I were in your shoes.
MachineryTrader, Mascus, and Truck1 are the big players in the used equipment space. You'll find everything from small 60m³/h plants to big stationary setups listed there. Alibaba also has a surprising number of used plant listings, but you have to be careful — some sellers will post new photos of a plant that's been sitting in the weather for three years. Always ask for photos of specific components taken that day.
Some of the best deals come from contractors who finished a big infrastructure project and now have a plant they don't need. These plants are often well-maintained because the contractor was using them for their own work, not renting them out. Check with construction companies that just wrapped up highway or dam projects in the Gulf states — those are goldmines for good used plants.
When a customer buys a new plant from a dealer, the dealer sometimes takes the old one as a trade-in. These units get inspected and serviced before being listed, so they tend to be cleaner than private sales. You'll pay a bit more, but you get some peace of mind. This is the meat of the guide. Print this section out and take it with you when you go to inspect a plant. I'm going to walk through every major system and tell you what to look for.
This is the heart of the plant, and it's also the most expensive single component to replace. You want to be really thorough here.
Liner wear: Open the mixer door and look at the liner plates. They should be relatively smooth and flat. If you see deep grooves, gouges, or holes worn through, that's trouble. Liner replacement on a twin-shaft mixer like a JS2000 can cost $3,000 to $6,000 depending on the brand. If the liners are already shot, use that to negotiate the price down.
Mixing arms and blades: Check the clearance between the mixing arms and the liner. On a twin-shaft mixer, the gap should be between 3mm and 5mm. If it's wider than that, the mixing efficiency drops and you're not getting homogeneous concrete. Also look for cracks or heavy wear on the blade edges.
Shaft seals: This is a big one. Leaking shaft seals let slurry get into the bearing housing, and once that happens, you're looking at a full bearing replacement. Run the mixer briefly if you can — look for oil or slurry leaking from the seal area. A little seepage is normal on older machines. Active dripping is a red flag.
Hydraulic system (if applicable): Some plants use hydraulic systems for the discharge door. Check for leaks around the cylinder seals and listen for unusual noises when the door cycles.
The aggregate batching system takes a beating. You're dumping rocks and sand into it all day, every day.
Weigh hopper condition: Look for holes, cracks, or heavy rust on the hopper walls. A little surface rust is fine, but if you can poke through with a screwdriver, that section needs replacement. Check the rubber lining or wear plates if they're fitted.
Load cells: These are the sensors that measure the weight of aggregates. They're sensitive. Look for physical damage, bent mounting brackets, or signs of water getting into the junction box. A damaged load cell will give inaccurate weights, and that means bad concrete. Replacement load cells run $150 to $400 each, and you usually need three or four per hopper.
Conveyor belt: Check the belt for cuts, frayed edges, and delamination. Also check the tracking — does the belt run straight, or does it wander? A belt that needs replacement will cost you $1,000 to $3,000 installed. Check the idler rollers too — if they're seized or worn flat, they'll chew up a new belt fast.
Cement silos look simple, but they have a few critical points.
Silo condition: Look for rust, especially at the bottom where moisture collects. Check the welds on the legs and supports. Silo capacity should match your production needs — a 100-ton silo feeds roughly 80 to 100 cubic meters of concrete before needing a refill, depending on the mix design.
Filter system: Open the filter housing at the top of the silo. The filter cartridges should be intact and relatively clean. Clogged filters cause back pressure that can collapse a silo in extreme cases — it's rare but it happens. A full filter replacement runs $500 to $1,500.
Screw conveyor: Run it briefly if you can. Listen for grinding noises from the screw rubbing against the tube wall. Check the hanger bearings — these wear out regularly and should be easy to reach. A worn screw section can be replaced, but if the tube is worn through, the whole conveyor needs to come out.
This is where a lot of used plants show their age. A batching plant control system from 2010 is a different animal from one built in 2022.
PLC and HMI: What brand is the PLC? Siemens, Schneider, and Omron are common. If it's some no-name brand from fifteen years ago, getting replacement parts or technical support is going to be a nightmare. Check the HMI screen for dead pixels, touch sensitivity issues, or cracks. A replacement touchscreen panel is $500 to $2,000.
Wiring: Open the electrical cabinet. I'm looking for signs of rodent damage, corroded terminals, burned wires, or messy wiring that doesn't match the drawings. A rat-chewed wire harness can cause intermittent faults that are incredibly hard to diagnose. If the control cabinet looks like a rat motel, walk away.
Software and recipes: Does the system still have the recipe database? Can you access the production logs? Some sellers wipe the system clean before sale, and then you're stuck programming everything from scratch. Make sure the software media and licenses transfer with the plant.
The pneumatic system controls the butterfly valves, discharge gates, and dust collectors.
Air compressor: Check the oil level, listen for knocking sounds, and look for oil leaks. A compressor rebuild is $300 to $800. A full replacement is $1,500 to $3,500.
Cylinders and solenoid valves: Watch the system cycle if you can. Do all the cylinders move smoothly? Any valve that sticks or chatters needs service. Rebuild kits for pneumatic cylinders are cheap — $20 to $50 per cylinder — but if most of them are bad, the labor adds up.
I get asked this question all the time. "Is a 10-year-old batching plant too old?" The answer depends on three things: how many cubic meters it's produced, how well it's been maintained, and what brand it is.
Here's a rough guide based on what I've seen in the field:
A quick way to estimate total production: ask for the plant's production logs or job records. If they don't have them, check the hour meter on the mixer motor. Divide total hours by two (roughly half the time is mixing, half is loading/filling) and multiply by the plant's rated capacity. It's not perfect, but it gives you a ballpark.
Not all parts of a used plant are equally important. Here's my priority list when doing an evaluation:
Priority 1 — The mixer. If the mixer is shot, the plant's value drops by half or more. A new twin-shaft mixer for an HZS90 plant costs $15,000 to $25,000. Factor that into your offer.
Priority 2 — The structure (main frame and silos). Rusted-out structural steel is expensive to replace. Surface rust is cosmetic. Section loss in load-bearing members is a structural issue that requires a professional engineer to sign off on repairs.
Priority 3 — The control system. An obsolete control system limits your production efficiency and makes troubleshooting a nightmare. If the PLC is from a brand that's no longer supported, budget for a retrofit. A basic control system upgrade runs $8,000 to $15,000 installed.
Priority 4 — The cement weighing system. Inaccurate cement weighing means bad concrete. Period. Check the screw conveyor, the cement hopper load cells, and the butterfly valve seals.
Priority 5 — Water and admixture systems. These are relatively cheap to fix, so don't sweat them as much. A new water pump is $200 to $500. Admixture pumps run $300 to $800.
Importing a used batching plant across international borders adds a whole other layer of complexity. Here's what I've learned from helping clients in over 20 countries get their plants delivered.
Most used plants ship in one of two ways:
Flat rack container: The main components are strapped to a flat rack container. This is ideal for the mixer unit, the main frame sections, and the control room. The flat rack costs about the same as a standard 40-foot container but takes more specialized handling at the destination port.
Break bulk: Larger plants or complete dismantled plants go break bulk — loaded loose into the ship's hold or on deck. This is cheaper per cubic meter but carries higher risk of damage. Make sure your shipment is properly crated and weather-proofed. I've seen cement silos arrive dented because they weren't properly braced.
Used machinery import duties vary wildly by country. Here's what I've seen recently:
Always check with a customs broker in your country before you buy. Duty rates change, and some countries have restrictions on importing used machinery over a certain age. Getting a plant stuck at customs because you didn't check the age limit is a nightmare I don't wish on anybody.
Make sure the seller provides these documents before you ship:
One option I recommend to a lot of buyers: have the plant refurbished before it ships. The labor cost for refurbishment in China is significantly lower than in most destination markets. You can have a used plant stripped down, cleaned, painted, have worn liners replaced, new seals installed, and the control system updated — all before it goes in a container. The cost of this work in China is roughly half of what you'd pay in Africa or Southeast Asia for the same work. Plus, the plant arrives ready to install rather than needing weeks of repairs.
